IBM built Watson to beat Ken Jennings at Jeopardy, and now someone’s gone and created software that can report on baseball games at least as well as humans can (if not better than some humans).

These are pretty impressive computer tricks, and a testament to what raw computer processing power and a maturing set of software libraries can pull off. But as much as I love reading stories like this, I have to admit to feeling a little bit of anxiety at where this all might lead one day.

It reminds me of the old Woody Allen routine that goes something like this: My father was fired from his job, because they built a computer that could do everything my father could do, only better. And then he came home to find out that my mother had bought one.
